the sound of crashing waves washed her with a surreal calmness that was hard to explain. Emberly always was the kind of person to notice the small things. She saw strength instead of flaw and potential instead of chaos. Emberly’s heart was as pure as it got with the gift of a short temper from her old man. It was her biggest flaw and she was quite honestly working hard not to let it show. That particular day had simply been a rollercoaster that left her unsure and uncertain and yet she was grinning as she stepped up to Roy with her fingers softly grazing his shoulder in an effort to draw his attention.
“Would you stop sulking?”, she asked him honestly feeling the waves roll over her bare toes and leave a blissful cool touch to her skin. “We both fucked up, okay? You might be a dick but I’m halfway sure that’s not all you are. And I might have overreacted but in my defence, the commercials were definitely the strangest introduction I’ve ever had to someone”, she held her slender palm out for his to shake with a delightful smile and an honest edge to her gaze.
“Walk with me?”, she asked him with a playful tone to her voice before backing away from him and following the shoreline as the world around them only grew more beautiful every moment. The galaxy decorated the sky above her in awe striking stars as the full moon lit up the world in a surreal silver hue. Roy was special, she knew that by simple observation but she wasn’t fearful of what he could do. Emberly was somewhat curious to see what lay beneath all the surface and truly surprised at her change of heart. Still, she couldn’t force Roy to let go of the broody state of mind he was in, she simply hoped he would take her up on his offer.

Emberly felt guilty for her fit of anger, she wanted to apologize in more convincing words until the waitress interrupted the train of thoughts darting through her mind. She rolled her eyes at the rude question and found herself oddly surprised at Roy’s reaction. It was in all honesty, the last thing she expected.
“No problem, I don’t hold grudges”, the words were a subtle recognition of the waitress and her quick apology but carried depth for Roy. She forgave him hopeful that he would forgive her too. There was a superficial arrogance to him but she was almost certain that there was more to him than that. Emberly was intrigued, more so than ever, to see the man underneath. The words that left his mouth next drew her into a shocked silence, she wasn’t sure how to react. For a few long moments, she occupied the booth alone with only her thoughts to keep her company. She considered leaving it be but she felt guilty and awful for being so angry at someone who’d tried to get to know her even if she didn’t agree with the unique methods he’d used.
Emberly stepped outside with a soft sigh and glanced at the silhouette of a man by the beach. Unsure if it was truly him, she took an impulsive chance and closed the space with a comfortable pace among underneath the starry night. The sound of crashing waves washed her with a surreal calmness that was hard to explain. Emberly always was the kind of person to notice the small things. Emberly huffed annoyed as she stepped out of the elevator, it was supposed to be such a calm night under the watchful eye of the galaxy’s lights and instead it was cut short by the unwanted persistence of a man she hardly knew. She had half a mind to break his nose if he ever tried to approach her again. Inside her room she gently took the halo of flowers from her head and set it down on a beautiful table in the corner before making her way to the balcony overlooking the beauty of the beach. She took the flower from his gifted bouquet and tossed it over the railing with a wrathful shove of her palm. The breeze was a welcome touch to her skin for a few long seconds before she made her way back inside.
Emberly was halfway through tying her hair into a braid in sight of the tall mirror hung up against the wall when she spotted the television screen behind her. She was confused at first and truly astonished in an irritated sort of way as the commercial progressed. Roy, barely dressed in anything just sprawled out on a bed. For a second she wondered if he partook in some truly odd commercials. While she could honestly compliment his physique, she had a hard time fighting the urge of tossing the whole TV over the railing and into the enormous pool downstairs. Her arms folded over her chest as she lowered herself onto the edge of her bed to see how the ridiculousness would play out.
She found herself earnestly laughing at the idea of having Roy in her bed and found herself speaking loudly, almost wishing he could hear her. “Not a fucking chance”, she glared at the TV before switching the channel in the hopes that it was a bizarre coincidence and he simply acted every once in a while. The idea of him being a mutant wasn’t a thought in any way at that moment. When she truly saw the soap opera play out she had a gnawing suspicion that there was more to him than meets the eye. He was a dick but he was also apparently very capable of meddling in her life even when she left him rejected at the beach.
The whole scene was baffling, annoying and downright awkward. There was no way in hell she’d ever consider him as anything more than a pretentious dick she met on what was supposed to be the first step in her everlasting freedom. She shook her head at the screen, if he wanted her to call him that badly she’d crush her damn phone before she even dared hear his voice again. Still, annoyance was a powerful tool and she didn’t know how long she could wait until she picked up the phone if only to tell him what a jackass he was.
“Go screw yourself”, she lifted the remote into her palm one more time before changing the channel and tossing the remote into the corner when his egotistical image appeared third time. She dropped her face into her palms with an annoyed sigh. Emberly only had that much patience and in pure irritation she found herself dialling the number on the screen. She couldn’t stay still as it rung and stood up to pace on the balcony where the TV couldn’t ruin the rest of her night at hand.
“Listen up you egostistical dick. I don’t care who or how the hell you’re doing this, just stay the hell away from me”, she angrily told him the moment he picked up the phone. Emberly didn’t wait much longer than that, she tossed the phone on her bed with an angry sigh, grabbed her jacket and left the room hoping that some fresh air would help clear her mind. Somewhere he couldn’t annoyingly wiggle his dumbass into her life. Emberly was honestly one of the nicest people you could meet but she had a short temper and he had an uncanny ability to piss her off. She wanted to see the beach again, perhaps a stroll through the empty streets but thought she’d rather spend her time not getting lost in a foreign place when everyone she’d ask for directions were either soundly asleep or busy with their own lives. Instead, she found herself comfortably sliding into a stool at the lovely hotel bar.
The bartender was a handsome young man who offered a charming smile as he requested her drink, Emberly smiled kindly before leaning forward to glance at the options stacked on modern shelves behind the man. “You know what,” she told him finding herself almost indecisive, “just give me a beer”. A simple choice and a drink she’d grown accustomed to working the bar back home. When she held out the money he rejected the idea and insisted it was on him instead. She sat comfortably with the cold bottle tucked between her fingers unknowing that she accidentally put herself closer to Roy than she truly preferred.

Emberly was only half surprised that he’d join her in the calm serenity of stargazing. In all honesty, she thought the continued rejection of his charming attempts would drive him to someone who would happily fall for the allure of his words and handsome features. Nevertheless, she didn’t halt in her awe of the coming night’s sky. The stars peeking into existence while she watched the striking glitter of a galaxy in front of her eyes was one of the more beautiful sights she’d been blessed to witness. The teddy bear rested comfortably by her side, she saw a small crab view the stuffed animal a quick second before darting away towards the rocky outcrops to her right, far enough that she wasn’t all too tempted to walk there in the dark of night.
“Emberly, just Emberly”, she smiled softly at the reveal of her name. there was no real benefit of admitting her full identity, he probably didn’t care either way. She didn’t pay him much mind besides a curious peek out of her peripheral, her fingers drew unseen symbols into the sand as time ticked by awe strikingly slow. Seconds felt like an eternity of beauty that drew her in with a single gaze. Emberly was all for adventure, every drop of her being yearned to see something new and she finally had the opportunity.
His name echoed in her mind like a bittersweet melody. The name of a man who was charismatic and insanely handsome but a man who wanted nothing more but physical intimacy. She wasn’t that kind of woman, she never was. It was one of the more prominent reasons why she could deal a good punch. Men tried their luck and men failed, she only ever liked one person and he turned out to be like all the rest. Her lips curled into a small grin however, she was curious about surfing simply because she’d never done anything alike before. Still, she’d probably write it off as a missed opportunity, there was no use setting the guy up for another rejection by asking him to teach her.
“Do I look like a local?”, she didn’t mean for it to sound quite as sarcastic as it came forth but she covered up the slight sassy tone with a charming smile at Roy. He was quite on point, she thought he’d attribute her unfamiliarity with the world around them to pure wonder and joy for simple things that locals grew accustomed to. He was smart enough to notice the light porcelain of her skin though and she wondered how smart he was underneath all the charming flirts, perhaps more than she gave him credit for.
“Smart”, a short comment coated in honesty, she was impressed with his observation. She turned to gaze at him, curiously trying to see more of the man underneath the layers and layers of charisma and pride. Emberly thought she saw the flicker of something honest until she felt the warmth of his hand on her hip and the yearning closeness of a coming kiss. Her lips were agape, not in preparation for a kiss but in frank shock that he’d dare try his luck when she was opposed to his advances.
Emberly knew he couldn’t see it coming, his eyes was closed after all. Her arm drew back and she harshly shoved her fist into his fist before standing to her feet and putting enough distance between them. The teddy bear in her hands flew to his chest as she cursed lightly under her breath. “You should try putting your dick back in your pants every once in a while”, she glowered at him before deeming his persistent charms unfitting for her peace of mind and began an angry walk back to the hotel. Emberly had half a mind to turn back and shove him into the ocean but thought against it, took a deep breath and attempted to leave the awful encounter behind her as nothing more but an uncomfortable memory underneath a canopy of awe striking galaxy lights.

She found herself laughing as he caught up, an honest yet charming chuckle of a girl who knew when trouble was knocking. Roy spoke volumes of trouble, she could see it in the cocky glint of his gaze. There was no doubt in her mind that a wink from him could draw in most women but she wasn’t interested. Perhaps if he wasn’t so transparently used to getting what he wanted she would have wanted to give him a shot but she had a gnawing suspicion that he was the kind of man who charmed a dozen women and left them all with shattered hearts and hopeless dreams of a charming man who didn’t want to commit. Emberly had seen a lot of men who were similar, there was something uniquely charming about the way he approached her.
A grin lit up on her lips, somewhat confused all the same at the sight of flowers with no others in sight. She was sure his hands were empty when he got rejected the first time but somehow he managed to dig up a beautiful bundle of flowers. “You’re persistent, I’ll give you that”, she reached forward and plucked a single flower from the bundle before tucking it behind her ear amidst the dark curls slowly inching over her shoulder in the caress of a soft breeze. She found herself grasping the bundle of flowers with a curious glance to an old couple passing by, she stepped towards the old man first with a soft smile upon her lips. Emberly held the flowers to him as his wife excitedly pointed to a parrot flying overhead, “a surprise for your beautiful wife”. He instantly insisted he wouldn’t be able to take them but she happily pushed them to his chest before turning back to the conversation with Roy. A charming conversation that truly left her mind somewhat baffled. She’d never met a man like him, someone so cocky and arrogant yet charming and intriguing.
She watched him closely, never once able to ignore the shimmer of stars growing on the horizon behind him and the soft melody of crashing waves. It was paradise with a unique bump in a road she hadn’t foreseen. Her eyes grew wide at the sight of another reveal, a cute gift that truly left a small smile on her lips. Emberly wasn’t sure how he’d done it or if he was dedicated enough to do it for all the beautiful girls she was certain he’d charmed. Nevertheless, she held the soft bear to her chest, “Thank you?”, it was more a statement than a question but she was caught of guard. The whole encounter was bizarrely charming in it’s own way but she’d never been in any situation even remotely similar.
“I’m curious how you managed it”, she gestured down to the gift with a curious glance, “but I have a feeling you won’t confess”. There were no strange suspicions in her mind, simply pure and honest curiosity. Emberly found the horizon’s beauty so captivating that she simply sunk down into the sand, not a care in the world of how dirty her white dress might get. Sand pushed up between her toes and she wondered in all honesty if he would even persist beyond his tireless efforts.
A soft laugh slipped through her lips at his cocky assumption that she’d be spending more time than a brief introduction on a beautiful beach with him. “You’re welcome to do whatever floats your boat princess but I’m just gonna watch the stars”, Emberly felt the blunt sarcasm roll over her in a fierce wave. She was a sweet girl with pure and honest intentions but un uncanny ability to offer up the truth in a brutal harshness when the moment called for it. She had to give him some imaginative points for continued efforts and bold assumptions.
Emberly found herself turning to look at him with her slender figure resting on the soft sand, crowned halo nearly toppling off her natural curls and eyes filled with wonder. “I bet you’re used to an impressive success rate with women.”, she was curious what lay deeper underneath the layers of charm and arrogance but Emberly wasn’t sure she wanted to risk the efforts it would take to find out. “Unfortunately, you’re gonna have to get used to some disappointment if you think it’s this easy to win me over”, there was a victorious smirk atop her lips slightly coated in a rebellious mischief and confidence.

Emberly couldn’t believe her luck, the kind old man who regularly visited the bar she’d worked at was as generous in death as he was in life. She never hesitated to talk to him about all the war stories that rolled off his tongue like he was reliving every second. When he died, sadly to cancer, he left her a small sum of cash to send her on a trip she’d wanted for a very long time. Emberly fondly remembered the small card attached, ‘Get lost and live’. It was a kind gesture, one that she planned to embark on with every happy ounce of her soul. It wasn’t long after his funeral which she absolutely refused to miss that she bought a plane ticket to Hawaii. There were no words to describe her excitement, she wanted to experience the culture in its entirety. A sense of nervousness grasped at her mind but she paid it little attention, it was simply the anxiety of embarking on something entirely new to her.
She’d been in Hawaii for two days by the time she found herself on the beach, a flowing white dress hugged her curves as she dug her bare feet into the soft caress of the sand of the beach. Her long curls hung comfortably over her shoulders as a cool breeze shifted a few stray strands of auburn hair into her gaze. She didn’t mind it much, a quick tuck of hair behind her ear left her sight open to the beauty of the world in front of her. Emberly was lost in her own world, a beautiful flower crown donning bright orange and soft pink flowers atop her head. She’d gotten it as a kind gesture from an old woman in a local market place and it fit her like a masterpiece.
Emberly was a sight of true and utter selfless happiness, she could wander the unfamiliar streets for an eternity and still see the perfection in every crack and crevice. She smiled softly at the waves lapping onto the soft sand by her toes before pressing a hand to her chest with a sad glance to the small fluffs of cloud rolling overhead. “Thanks Roger”, a final goodbye to a friend who offered her a uniquely perfect chance to embark on a lifelong dream.
Emberly turned to the new voice, it drew her curiosity until words fully materialized past his lips. He was an extremely handsome man and she could hardly deny that. Everything from the chiselled charm of his face to the toned perfection of his figure would drive any woman crazy. Not Emberly though. She was the type of person who saw the soul instead of the vessel. She was a seeker of truth and purpose and she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind.
She found herself almost teasingly lean forward, towards the goofy ridiculousness of his words and the cheesy edge to his grin. “I bet this is the part where most women swoon”, Emberly tucked a rebellious strand of hair behind her ear and folded her arms comfortably over her chest with a small, delicate smirk. “Sorry handsome, you’re barking up the wrong tree. I’m not interested”, she chuckled softly with a small wave of her palm before stepping away from the stranger. He was curious, obviously arrogant but there was a charming edge to him. Emberly simply didn’t want to waste her time in a conversation that would inevitably end up in rejection and broken pride.
Emberly started following the beach, the sun was slowly setting over the horizon in a beautiful intimacy of bright orangue hues blending into a fiery red as it gave way to a dark navy sky. Night was coming and she was more than curious to watch the stars light up the sky. The beach was mostly empty as she dug her toes into the breaking waves and felt the cool caress off their escape back to the ocean. Nevertheless, she wasn’t an idiot and she could hear the soft thuds of feet sinking into sand. Feet other than her own. For a second she wondered if it was the same handsome stranger with a relentless ideal to try his luck again but she didn’t turn to look. She supposed it wouldn’t be too long when she found out if her suspicions were correct or not.
