Julie found the light
RUNNING FROM THE DAY
Julie had been having the nightmares. There was no doubt about that. She didn't tell Sarah though. She didn't want to worry her and to Julie, they were just nightmares. She hadn't considered that this was a mutant ability of some stark raving psychopath. Julie believed that she deserved the nightmares. They were her penance for getting half the team killed. Even though it really wasn't her fault.
They had gone up against an incredibly powerful foe. One that none of them truly understood or was even ready for. Baby. And Baby was the trophy taking kind of psycho. He had stolen left over body parts in the carnage. More specifically the body part that dealt with their mutations. For Jennie the psychic it was her brain that Baby kept. Sealed away in a jar with embalming fluid. For Maverick the member of the time that could create smoke from his finger tips it was his hand that Baby kept as a trophy.
It was a game to the psycho. He was building the perfect toy to play with. A best friend with all the best body parts and important powers. Weather or not this was going to work was irrelevant. In his mind by adding all these pieces he could make this work. It was part of the reason he attacked the X-Men the way he did. Julie smiled at the two of her friends standing in the hall. The ice blocked off several pathways and she breathed a sigh of relief. Her sigh came out cold as icy breath. Just being near Sarah.
She loved the girl. But she would definitely have to invest in some more winter time clothes. "We should stick together. I don't like the idea of spllitt'in up. We might could cover more ground that way, but we could also get sloppy." Julie said. Even now, in the calm collected chill of her lover she spoke with a thick Georgia southern accent. Julie's country girl turns of phrase and particular way of speaking had always been almost a calling card. "We should...." "Freeze assholes." Someone called out running up behind the trio.
Julie didn't have to turn around to know that it was just a simulation. Security had been non existant up to this point, but she assumed they would run into a little resistance sooner or later. More guards showed up weilding guns and waving them at the three heroes. "Stand down. You are surrounded." One of them said. They hadn't come down the pathways that were blocked off by the ice but rather right in front of them. Their movements were masked by the darkness of the hallway and the unfamiliarity with the surroundings.

Julie found the light
RUNNING FROM THE DAY
Watch my rear... Like it was even a question. Ordinarily it was hard enough to take her eyes off the magnificent thing, but under the circumstances; simulation or no she wasn't going to loose anyone else. Julie had something to prove not only to herself but to the whole school. She felt the weight of that annoying monkey on her back. A big hairy ape named guilt. The icy touch of her breath against her skin still lingered. Sarah was an incredibly warm person for such a cold facade.
Julie sighed and nodded. She wasn't used to taking orders rather than giving them. She liked to be in control, and at the same time she couldn't be far enough away from the steering wheel. The worst part about it.... The absolute worst thing was the mutant who killed half the team was still out there. He got away and Julie wasn't even able to take a piece of avenging pride home with her.
She barely escaped herself. New York was a swirling wormhole of chaos and destruction. But if you ask any single New York resident if they remembered the event the answer would be a resounding no. It was all thanks to his terrible, horrible abilities. The ones he dispatched violence and disregard with. And that mask. That horrible mask. There was a smile touching her lips and teetering on the edge of deception. On the surface she was composed. Inwardly she was a ball of livewires and nerves. "Okay." She said quietly. Then the voice spoke up behind them and Julie jumped.
"Cheese and Rice! Masters?!? You scared the daylights out of me!!!" Terrible pun, but you will forgive her under the circumstances. Her heart galloped a pace that would win any Kentucky Derby and bring home the blue ribbon. Julie looked at him softly for a moment. Studying the lines an contures of his face she couldn't believe he showed up. She couldn't believe that a single member of the team even still believed in her. She reached out a hand and pressed it flat against his chest.
His pectorals and firm muscle rested quietly, warmly beneath her fingertips. Her hand began to glow as she searched his heart. Invasive? Probably, but she had to know. More than nightmares had been eating into her sleep lately. She had to confirm it. She could see the soft twinkle of light rippling out from between his chest and her hand. The soft light spilled over the sides and showered down. Bright white. Pure as snow. She smiled at him again, this time a little more convincingly. Julie had the ability to search your heart to see if any darkness had crept into it. This could be in the form of anger, jealousy.... More importantly doubt.
There was none. At least none that she could see. Reaching up she tucked a few loose strands of hair behind her ear. Pulling his spilling light with a swishing wave of her elegant hand; Julie shaped and formed the light into a beacon. One that she pushed foward with an open palm and centered around his shoulder. "Let it guide you..... In case we can't keep up."
The last part she added with a smirk. At least if they got serparated he had a guiding like she had bound to him. It would follow him around until something changed. Some flash of anger that crawled into his mind might flood out his good light and extinguish his torch. "Let's press on." She said taking slight control again. She found new confidence now that a member of the team had showed up. Moving past Sarah Julie took point bouncing and bending her own guiding light in front of her.

Julie found the light
RUNNING FROM THE DAY Julie watched and grew noticeably more and more concerned with Sarah's ability to deal with the heat. She had never considered it and when she turned on the simulation it wasn't a actual choice where or what they were doing. The simulation was programmed to add variables. To change things on the fly and be proceduraly generated. She had no more idea what was going to happen when the simulation started than Sarah did.
Walking up behind her she placed a soft hand on her back. "How you holding up?" She whispered. There was no mistaking the concern on her face as the two of them crouched in the clearing deciding which direction to take. When Sarah said they were going to investigate the drums up ahead Julie nodded. She was in a full support role and honestly the weight on her shoulders was much lighter because of it.
She would provide back up, but honestly she was quietly taking in Sarah's ability to lead. She had meant to bring it up before but.... She had always wanted Sarah to join the X-Team. Just something about fighting side by side seemed romantic and poetic at the same time.... But Sarah was a natural born leader. She just oozed potential and authority. Not to mention being an authoritarian in their personal lives....
"Okay. Set phasers to stun." She reminded her. No killing. It wasn't the X-men way and it would instantly crash the simulatio nwith a failure status. Julie moved and shaped the light and guided it down the left path towards the increasing thunder of the drums ahead. Sarah did in fact take charge and Julie doused her light to provide stealth as the drums stopped.
Julie found some tall grass to hide herself in and wait for whatever was going to..... What the hell? She thought as Sarah urged her to come on and they both started to run. "Well, guess we're going with plan B." She said. Pulling light down and shaping it into the shape of a shield Julie gripped it's luminescent handles and charged, falling in line right behind Sarah.

Julie found the light
RUNNING FROM THE DAY Julie smiled a little though it wasn't genuine. There was a sadness lingering there. Touching the bottom of her heart with a heavy weight that she could not shake. She was glad for this time with Sarah. It was almost as if she could let loose and not have to worry about being a disappointment in anyone's eyes. Julie didn't think that she could ever be a disappointment in Sarah's eyes.
Taking a step into the jungle Julie was frightened. Saddened and frightened. She was sad because she knew that this would only make Sarah try and dig her heels in and try and convince her to stay on the team. Julie had been thinking about giving up crime fighting all together. The world was in so much pain and she thought with her abilities of light and empathy she could find a way to make it better. She got her friends killed and she didn't want to see that again.
Still she knew if Sarah pushed her on the matter she would cave into it. She just wanted to make Sarah proud. Julie smiled a bit as she walked deeper into the jungle. She used her hands to shape and bend light to her liking as the sun was quickly setting. she captured and stole some of the light form the sun in the palms of her hands. It glowed and felt warm to her skin, though she could only imagine how Sarah felt in this sweltering jungle.
Up ahead in the jungle clearing there were two distinct paths. One going left, and the other going right. Both were dark and Julie pushed her light forward to brighten the way, but this was Sarah's call. She was taking the lead on this mission. Julie was almost a little excited, if not terrified to see Sarah in action. She was so strong and confident.
Julie knew she would bring the mission to a success. The left path had jungle drums beating loudly from that direction. You could hear it loud as day. The right path seemed to have a storm brewing with dark clouds moving over it. Though smoke rose from the jungle canopy over the treetop. Dark plumes of rich smoke. But which way did they go? "Well? Right or left do ya thank?" Julie asked in her sweet southern bell voice.

Julie found the light
RUNNING FROM THE DAY Julie smiled a soft caring smile. It wasn't like her to be sad. Not really. She was pretty happy go lucky and it took a lot to upset her, but the growing realization that she was a terrible leader for the team was all to powerful to ignore. "I'm stepping down as X-Team Leader. The Xavier School. Deserves someone better to lead the X-men then me." Julie said.
There was no depression in the tone of her voice. Just purely factual statements. She had made up her mind and Julie was very stubborn. Once she had made up her mind to do something there was no changing it. There was no changing it for all the gold in King Midas's touch. She shrugged her shoulders and sighed. Only perking up a bit at Sarah's display of her wonderful and amazing abilities. She was sometimes quite jealous of Sarah's gifts.
Though it made her cold to the touch she had the most wonderful warm heart and that was all that really mattered. Still, even if she was giving up on the X-Team she still wouldn't mind getting some practice in anyways. Julie had never fought side by side with Sarah. It was going to be a wonderfully amazing opportunity. Something she was honestly looking forward too. "Show off." She smirked in her southern Georgia accent.
Walking over to a computer Julie pressed a few buttons. The lights flickered and the room went dark. A large whirling sound echoed across the room as the perimeters of her simulation came to life. Suddenly they were in a thick and vast jungle. The simulation was so accurate and lifelike that you could feel the heat on your skin. You could hear the animals of the jungle and you could almost smell the rain ready to pour any moment. It wasn't just a jungle it was a rainforrest..
Above them words floated as the simulation gave the mission objectives. "Find and rescue The President. Unearth the G.A.D.E.M. secrets. Kill no one. Failure of any of these perimeters will result in an instant mission fail." Julie looked at Sarah with a light smile on her lips. "How about you take the lead on this one babe." She said. Julie just didn't have it in her to take charge and lead the mission.

Julie moved quickly to the training room. It was affectionately called The Danger room. It was a large room with metal walls and a cold interior. It was the basis for all of the X-Team training. It had a computer with a sophisticated A.I. within it. It could create illusions and real world examples of dangers you might face and the simulation was so complete and authentic that you could feel the punch of a simulated foe. You could feel the heat from simulated fire licking at your skin. Julie' moved inside quickly. She smiled and nodded at several students as she passed.
The danger room simulation was going to start soon and the X-Team was down to only a handful of members. Julie included. There had been a big battle recently and sadly half of the X-Team had died in it trying to save the city. They did save the city, but not before suffering heavy losses. Julie was the leader of that team and it was her judgments and calls that got half her team killed. She honestly didn't feel as if she still deserved to lead the team but she came back to a hero's welcome. One she definitely felt as though she didn't deserve. Moving down the stairs quietly Julie pushed open the danger room doors.
No one showed up. Damn. No one believed in her anymore. No one wanted to join the X-Team with her as the leader. She might get them killed. She was about to pack it up and decide that training was canceled when she noticed Sarah had followed her down. "Hey..." She said quietly. Julie didn't want her knowing something was the matter. "Training is canceled I guess. Want to get something to eat?" Julie was really excited about the possibility of training today. To make up for her mistakes in the field. She needed training. She looked at Sarah quietly wondering if Sarah might actually want to train. Julie had never actually seen her abilities in combat or in action. "Actually. would you like to train with me? I think it could be good." She said softly. Julie was just happy it was a simulation and should couldn't get Sarah killed in any way.

Waking up the next morning Julie found that she was not so incredibly rested. She yawned and stretched within Sarah's grasp. The clock on the dresser read 7 am and Sarah was not yet awake. Julie slipped out of her arms and put her bare feet on the floor. The floor was cold to the touch, and must of the room was. The heater Julie had left running last night did little to help. The thermostat was cranked up to 88 and still the room was chilly. Living with Sarah was bound to be hell on the heating bill. Julie was just glad it wasn't her bill to pay.
Moving as quietly as she could across the room She tip toed along and got some clothes from the dresser. Careful not to wake Sarah Julie slipped into the bathroom for a nice morning shower. The water felt great over her skin. Warm and inviting and though she cared for Sarah and Julie was very much a cuddler. Her icy grip was pretty cold. Even under the warm spray of the shower Julie sneeze. Oh dear... She thought. I think I'm getting a cold. A pouty frown stretched across her face. Her wet hair sticking to her head slicked back and raining down her shoulders. Julie turned off the water and stepped out. Drying quickly and getting dressed in the bathroom.
She went about her usual morning routine of brushing her teeth and fixing her make up. She wanted to look good after all and she wasn't as confident in her natural beauty as Sarah was. Julie finished her eye shadow and got on her shoes sitting on the closed toilet. It was then she crept out of the room. Gently leaning over to kiss Sarah on the head before she slipped out for her morning jog. Julie liked to stay fit and she would jog around the campus grounds every morning. It was a good way to clear her head and just take perspective of everything. Not to mention she had to lead the danger room assignment today. The team was training and with Brad injured someone had to step in and be a substitute. She thought about asking Sarah, but she knew Sarah didn't care for that. They may have to just run the simulation a man short.
The hypothetical mission was already going to be hard enough. But now they were going to be a man short. Injuries happen when people weren't well rested. And Julie was clumsy on top of that. No, it was not Julie's fault that caused the accident it was Brad's own carelessness. But It was because he didn't get a good night's sleep. Julie paused to check her pulse. Yawning a second time and sneezing to boot. Oh dear, I really am getting a cold she mused. Satisfied with her work out Julie jogged back inside. Her ponytail swishing side to side as she ran she was going to be late for training. She wished Sarah was joining her she hated the idea of being away from her all day, but she had to do what she had to do as the leader of the X-Men.

Sarah had leaned in and pressed her lips to Julie's again. When their lips parted Julie blew out a breath of frosty ice. The way your breath is visible on cold winter nights. She would never be used to that. Sarah had a warm soul but she was always cold. What was the worst was at night when her cold feet ran up the side of your leg. Julie didn't mind that much. "You're so cold sugar. Come'on lemme warm you up." She suggested timidly. It wasn't her place to suggest it. She hadn't been given permission, but Julie reveled in the struggle. She liked to try and seize tiny bits of control and was thrilled when her strict disciplinarian put her back in her place.
There was an honest love there. Something Julie had not felt in a long time. She missed her brothers back home in Georgia but she knew that being in the Xavier school was always the place for her. She liked being able to reach out and help other mutants and though her brothers were always supported of her abilities her parents....Well, they were a different story. Julie wasn't so warmly received by her parents when they found out about her mutations. Julie didn't know about Sarah's family. She had never really talked about it with her. She wished that Sarah would open up to her more. To let her in just the tiniest bit. But Sarah was so guarded and harsh. She cared for her a lot but she could tell that sometimes Sarah held back.
Julie nodded and bit her lips as Sarah suggested a bed. It was better than being caught exposed in the kitchen. Teenage boys and girls didn't need to see any of their private intimacy and neither did anyone else for that matter. Julie had given herself to Sarah and it was special, but it was only for Sarah. She wasn't ashamed of their relationship and everyone in the Xavier school knew of them being an item but she didn't flaunt it. Not when she was supposed to be the example set for the younger generation. Instead Julie put a limit on their PDA most times... Other times she found it hard to control herself.
Reaching out Julie's hand cupped around Sarah's breast bone. A soft glow warmed her hand as she pulled a bit of Sarah's light from her heart. It wasn't much, only a little and pulling it from her heart did nothing to diminish the warmth and goodness that lied there. It wasn't as if taking some of her light would suddenly make her evil. It did not work that way. Julie twirled her fingers in the air and shaped the light into the shape of a glowing heart. It bounced and floated around their heads for a moment before moving silently down the hallway. Lighting their path as they moved through the common areas and up the stairs to the dormatories.
They had actually started living together. The two of them sharing one dorm room. It wasn't as cramped as it sounded. The dorms were two bedrooms and quite spacious. At least their was. It had a small kitchen and a lovely balcony. Yes, Julie had found herself with the mack daddy suite of all dorms, but it was cozy. Making their way upstairs Julie happily followed, being tugged along down the hallway until they found their way to their dorm. Julie leaned against the door, her finger itching and trailing along the woodgrain as she waited impatiently. Bashfully she bit her lip and tried to pull down on her shirt to cover the little exposed bit of skin. As if she had a choice in the matter she wanted Sarah to work for it.

Julie wasn't completely used to the idea of being in a relationship. Honestly it kind of shocked her how quickly she had settled into the new role. She felt the warm embrace of Sara behind her. "Wha...what are you doing?" She asked playfully. "The students could come in and catch us." She knew where this was heading. Sarah wasn't shy about what she wanted and Julie was happily submissive to her. With a sandwich in hand Julie turned around in Sarah's arms to face her. A smile touching the corners of her lips as her eyes bounced around Sarah's face, searching for a meaning behind it.
Julie was a soft hearted ball of brilliant light. Warm and amazing Julie was kind to everyone she ever met. And though she didn't know Sarah as well as she wanted too in the time they had spent together it was the honest warmth of Sarah's heart that first caught Julie's attention. You can lie with your words and you can lie with your actions, but there was no lying with your heart. Julie's ability to sense light and manipulate it went deeper than that. She could sense people's inherent goodness that lied within their heart. The more honest and pure a person's heart.... The more light she was able to pull from their heart and mold and manipulate. Bet you didn't know people's hearts had light in them? They did. It was part of their essence, their aura. People with dark hearts were the worst kinds of people. They were the people the X-Team sought to stop.
Swimming around in her arms in order to face her, Julie snaked her arms around Sarah's neck. Her arms hanging lightly as Sarah's blonde hair lying against her wrist. Julie leaned in and kissed her lips lightly, just a taste. Looking around to make sure no students were out of bed and wondering around Julie allowed her body to ease back into the counter. She liked the idea of Sarah taking control. She liked the idea of being that completely vulnerable with another person. She spent so much of her life with her walls up and guarded.... To allow that much control to another person was absolutely liberating. She held her breath as she waited. The back of her pink tank top rising slightly against the counter top as she waited with high hopes.
Julie was wearing light pink shorts that were rather high up on her thigh. They had the X-Logo on them but they were not official appareal. They were just something that was cute that she had made in one of her home economics classes during sewing time. "Your students.... You gave them the weekend off right?" Julie made a pouting face. "I'm so busy this weekend. It's really not fair." She pouted a little more. Puffing out her lower lip and trying to look as cute as she could. She couldn't help but have that Georgia accent slip out whenever she spoke. "Can't we spend a little time together before the weekend is over?"

Standing in the kitchen in her bare feet Julie wiggled her toes. The tile floor was cold and she yawned as she opened the fridge. It was 2:33 in the morning and she couldn't sleep. She hadn't slept very well the last few nights. Something was troubling her. Something had been tugging at her mind for the longest time and she thought it might've been one of her students. One of her students was struggling and she had been trying so hard to get through to the kid. The girl was tough as nails but she didn't want to be taught home economics. In reality Julie thought it was one of the most important classes taught at the school.
It showed mutant kids how to look out for themselves. It wasn't just cooking and sewing but it taught more than that. Julie liked to teach her students how to stay hidden. How to go out for food when it was safe and how to recognize when someone was going to attack you. Things that these kids honestly needed when they left this place. If they ever did. It was a said state of the world that people would just attack for simply being different but she knew it was true. Not everyone was blessed with a good heart.
Pulling a few things out of the fridge Julie started to make a sandwich. Her classes were over until Monday morning. She had a busy day ahead of her tomorrow grading papers and generally lazing about the mansion. She was just so tired. Not only was she the head home economics teacher but she was also leader of the X-Team. She wouldn't get to much time tomorrow to laze about as she had to run training sessions most of the day tomorrow. She wasn't much of a fighter. Her abilities were great but Julie didn't like violence. Not really. She spread mayo onto her sandwich as she yawned again. Turning to the sound of a new person entering the room. A bit of blush touched her cheeks as she saw it was Sarah. The art Teacher. I wonder what she's doing up at this hour she thought.
Turning back to her sandwich Julie spoke over her shoulder. "Late night?" Her voice was soft and sweet and quiet honestly shy. She had known Sarah only a short time. But what she knew of her was steeped in mystery. They hadn't had much time to actually get to know each other, but she could tell by the sideways glances that she had noticed Julie.
