The quiet serenity leaked into every crack and crevice of the old building. The floorboards creaked and groaned under the intruding footstep of exploration. Sound logic and good reason would tell her that this was a bad place. Though her heart belonged here. It felt like home. It felt safe and familiar. It felt like her past.
Dusty shot glasses lined the counter top. The jukebox flickered to life playing a strained rendition of Blue Oyster Cults "Don't fear the reaper." She was here, and yet she was not here. This visionists future of a life she never knew and was still drawn too. Playing cards littered the ground. There it was joined by bloodstains vomit and stripper's panties.
Nora stepped over these things with caution and intrigue. She couldn't deny that this was no part of a life she would have ever lived. Her moral upstanding would not upstand. She was raised a good catholic girl with traditional values. Mind your manners. Please and thank you. Respect your elders. She moved past a pool table that had a bag of money on it sitting next to a bag of drugs. A single spotlight shinned on the two of them. Like it was some choice. It felt like a fork in the road. A deciding path.
She moved up to it slowly as the jukebox continued to soundtrack her confusion and amazement. The guitar riffs only heightening the tension as her hand swooped over the soft broken in leather of the duffel. The swinging light fixture above her send shadows dancing and racing across the bar. She was here. Totally and utterly alone she found herself. In the midst of chaos and peace. She didn't want to leave this place. She wanted to tug at the string and see the mystery unravel before her eyes. She started to reach for the drugs when she was pulled away.
The soft kiss of sunlight on her eyelids brought her back from this dream. Nora sat up and rubbed her eyes. Andrew was still sleeping peacefully. She felt that odd sensation of deja vu and then it was gone. As quickly as it had come she had forgotten about it. Blinking a few times she stretched and yawned. Scratching the back of her head before leaning over and planting a kiss on Andrew's head. He was a good man. A good husband, and most importantly a good father.
It was her abilities, the ones she didn't even know she had that let her peak behind the curtain, and this hadn't been the first night. She had been to that same bar for the past few nights. Still unsure as to what it meant. Her mind was resisting the assimilation. She was remembering and not remembering a thing. Nora quickly gathered some clothes and got herself a quick shower. She didn't want to be late for church and already there was a mountain of tasks ahead of her.
Nora slipped into a black dress and something wholy unwholesome underneath. Hot pink and lace. Naughty fabric that Andrew would surely like later, but it was not time for that. The morning belonged to god and she went about her duties with quiet fascination over the dream she was already beginning to forget details about. The drugs in her system were strong. They were enough to overpower even her mind and finer details flew out of focus.
Church was a provocative sermon. Pastor Jim spoke about evil and the humanity in their fellow man. That we should love each other for our differences as well as our similar qualities, but for Nora, she felt as if he were speaking of something much larger. The sermon ended with Pastor Jim saying that he would see everyone at the big town BBQ. Nora followed her family and didn't say much on the ride over. Her mind was pulled back to that strange dream and she deserpately wanted to know what it meant. She wanted to know why such a place of ill repute would call to her so much and she frowned. Feeling as if pastor Jim's sermon should have been more about her wanting to indulge in her own personal evils.
Never the less her worries were swept away when Andrew took her by the hand and twirled her around. They were dancing in front of everyone and she didn't care. Eyes were all over them as they were the first to really start dancing at the event and other couples joined in but for a moment they were special. For a moment Andrew reminded everyone why he was so handsome and charming. He just knew how to have fun. He always had a smile on his face and she loved that about him.
Leaning her head on his shoulder she had to reach her tippy toes to do so. Even then he was leaning over to help her with the task. "I love you Andrew. I haven't felt myself these last few days and I'm sorry for that, but I love you." She said pulling him back and looking deeply into his eyes. If he were any kind of observant he would tell something was wrong. She almost looked on the verge of tears. Confusion pitched her voice and made it a slight unsteady, but she smiled through the teary eyed doubt. "I just don't want you to think that I don't." She said quietly.
She really wasn't as foolish as she looked. And she ordinarily was much more self assured and confident. A strong woman with a strong practice in medicine. Nora was a doctor at Sun Dale General. A neurosurgeon. G.A.D.E.M. taking full advantage of her abilities crammed her mind with 20 years of medical knowledge in a three hour video package. During which she was drugged, strapped to a chair and had her eyelids forcibly held open by metal hooks. Did she remember this? No, but that was her new identity in this make believe world. Nora wiped away at her tears. She didn't want to get emotional. Not at the party at any rate.
She had been so emotional lately and that was partly due to the fact that she was pregnant. Andrew didn't know yet. Or at least she didn't think he knew. She hadn't told him. She had just found out herself. She loved her little family and it would soon be getting a new addition. She only hoped that her husband was as happy about it as she was hopeful.
